Ebook About
Elastic habits are easier to form, more impactful, more fun, and more resilient than habits formed with any other strategy. These flexible habits are just as easy to form as a mini habit, but with 3x the results (or more). To explain how and why this is possible, here's a hypothetical scenario involving my greatest fear in the world... bears.Imagine you’re trail running in the woods, trying to set a new personal best time. Out of the corner of your eye, you see a large brown object moving towards you with great speed. And now it’s upon you. You gaze up in horror at a roaring mother grizzly bear. What do you do?Continue running (adrenaline boost!)Tackle the bearPlay deadCall out “Jumanji”Go ahead and play dead. It gives you the best chance of surviving a grizzly attack. But if you treated this situation as we are taught to treat goals and habits, you wouldn’t have that option. You’d have just one option, because most goals and habits are unchanging. So here’s your one option.1. Continue running (certain death)You had a plan (trail running), but your environment changed (momma bear). Whenever that happens, you must adapt to the unexpected situation for the best result. In the case of a bear attack, it can save your life. In the case of behavior change, it can save your habits. This concept doesn’t only apply in a negative way, either. There will be times in which a situation is more favorable than anticipated, in which case, adapting to seize the opportunity is in your best interest. But if you follow any other habit book’s advice, they will tell you to do the same thing every day, to be inflexible. The Result of Static HabitsIf your static habit is small, you’ll achieve remarkable consistency (mini habits). But on days in which you can do more, it will feel (and possibly be) wrong to aim for something that easy. Over time, this may frustrate you.If your static habit is large, you’ll have occasional big wins, but whenever life sends you a figurative grizzly bear, you’ll fail and your habit may die young.Small habits are the best choice if you choose to form a static habit, but here’s why you shouldn’t.The Power of Elastic HabitsNo two days are the same. By making your habits elastic, you can adapt your aim to conquer every unique day of your life. You will still be surprised by the crazy happenings of life, no doubt, but you will no longer be unprepared for them.Elastic habits give you an answer for every situation. They destroy excuses naturally, by saying, “Okay. How about doing this instead?” If normal habits are a hammer, elastic habits are your grandfather’s garage, a magical place with a tool for every need. It’s not a burden to have a hammer, a wrench, and a screwdriver—you simply select the one you need for the job.In this book, you’ll find a comprehensive framework of elasticity for habit building. Elastic materials are stronger than rigid, brittle materials because they can adapt to pressure. The same is true for habits. Any dread or sense of monotony you’ve felt about forming habits will disappear, because this system is dynamic and exciting.Your elastic habits can survive threats and thrive in favorable circumstances. There’s no downside because they’re simply a smarter version of the habits we typically try to form. Read Elastic Habits, and you’ll soon discover the power and freedom of smarter, flexible habits that adapt to your day.

Book Elastic Habits: How to Create Smarter Habits That Adapt to Your Day Review :

I’ve been a fan of Stephen Guise since I first read Mini-Habits a few years ago, and even more so after reading How to Be an Imperfectionist (one of the best self-help books I’ve ever read). But while for me mini-habits offer an effective strategy in some areas, in others I found that—paradoxically—they’re so small that I find myself subconsciously resisting doing them! (What’s the point of doing one pushup? What’s the big deal if forget to do it today? Oh…I haven’t exercised for a week…).Elastic Habits solves that problem! By having more “normal” sized goals to shoot for (“plus” and “elite”), while keeping the mini-habit as the basis for consistency, it should be possible to make better and more rapid progress.Even more important is combining this concept with “lateral flexibility.” I realize that mini-habits did include this concept with “flex” habits, but in practice I was never going to drive to the gym and then turn around and leave. With “going to boot camp class” as one of my elite goal options in an “elastic habits” system, I believe it will be easier to make progress. The only qualifier I would put on any of this is that the book just came out, so I haven’t had a chance to fully implement the approach. However, I am hopeful and looking forward to it making a difference.
I’m a self-help junkie and I’m familiar with many of the goal and habit books out there. I had come to the conclusion that you can’t set goals and live “real” life, life is too organic and unpredictable. Then I read Stephen Guise’s book “Mini Habits” and loved its premise, which made a big difference. After that I couldn’t wait for this book to get out because for the first time I could see that Stephen was on to something big—something to give me the next step. I can say in all honesty that this book is going to force every other book about goals and habits to rethink their stance. Typical goals take a super-person to attain because they’re inflexible, this one operates in real life with fallible humans. At some point as you read this book you’ll have an “Aha!” moment when its truth sinks in, and you’ll see how, in its simplicity, it will work. Elastic habits will work for me daily, no matter what kind of day I’ve had (or have before me). I can see myself pursuing my goals through my habits the whole year, not just fizzling out come March. This is the most valuable book I’ve ever read on habits and goals, and I’ve read a lot! It deserves more than 5 stars. Some quotes from the book that struck me:“Having an elastic habit feels like a super power because of how effortlessly it pushes you forward. … This strategy works with you and for you, however you wish to be worked with!”“Your path to success with elastic habits will be unique to you, because this isn’t an exact recipe you must follow; it’s a fun and flexible framework that adapts to your life.”“Unlike the human body, in goal systems, it’s rigidity that costs us energy. Why? Rigidity (or stability) means that you must adapt to your goal, requiring more effort from you for success. Flexibility means that your goal adapts to you, requiring less effort from you for success.”“When you’re forced to improvise with a static goal that is designed for predictability, disaster is inevitable. The whole framework falls apart, like a brittle material that reaches its elastic limit (e.g., glass shattering). There’s no easy way to make static goals work well, which is why they live and die like flies. Like most weak-but-unyielding things, they’re not built to survive for very long in your dynamic life, in this dynamic world.”Stephen lays it out and gives examples of what it looks like, and it’s genius in its simplicity.
